Perfect luxurious guest house to explore Durham
Very comfortable spacious room, large bathroom with bath, stand alone shower and more than enough space for anyone. The manager George was particularly helpful with advice about the city, parking restrictions etc as well as being responsible for some wonderful breakfasts.
40 Winks will suit people who want a quiet, peaceful place to stay. Five suites and four other bedrooms give it a quite an exclusive vibe and together with the dark, tasteful decoration in the staircase and landings it is quite sumptuous.
Are there any downsides? I guess if you have mobility issues the stairs may not be easy as the property has no lift because it is a period townhouse and there is only on street parking - expensive outside but much cheaper in a side road.
Listening to the soft bells of Durham Cathedral drifting across the river Wear as you wake or go to sleep however is completely relaxing.
Highly recommended.

Luxury, yet welcoming and homely!
A special thank you has to go to George, who looked after us so wonderfully throughout our stay. He gave us such a warm welcome, made us feel completely at home, and cooked one of the best breakfasts we've ever had. The duck confit breakfast was simply incredible, and the little welcome whisky on arrival was such a thoughtful touch.
One of the most memorable moments was when Helen surprised me by playing Happy Birthday on the piano during breakfast. It was such a heartfelt gesture that made my birthday celebration even more special.
It was also a real pleasure to meet Jonathan, the owner. His passion for 40 Winks shines through in everything he does. We were fascinated by his incredible knowledge and thoroughly enjoyed listening to his wonderful piano playing.
We were the only guests during our stay, yet the team still took the time to open every room so we could explore the entire guest house and experience everything it has to offer. That level of generosity and hospitality is so rare and made us feel genuinely valued.
40 Winks truly felt like a home from home, but with the luxury and attention to detail of a five-star boutique hotel. We had the most incredible couple of nights and couldn't have wished for a more perfect celebratory stay.
Thank you to Jonathan, George, Helen and the whole team for making our stay so unforgettable. We can't wait to return!

Fabulous Hotel
Breakfast was super with lots of options in a beautiful dining room .
Ellie and Helen who looked after us on our visit
Were lovely helpful and really engaging and made us feel special and welcome.
Wish we had discovered this hotel sooner. Can highly recommend.
