Quirky, comfortable, cooperative atmosphere

I booked a solo room for two nights in July (room 18). The building is old and everything functions despite feeling aged or creaky. The floors sing with each step. All the doors make an identifying noise. The windows open but protest at the handling. Despite these house noises the quiet hours are respected. Room 18 is off one of the kitchens by the back garden. The bed is the only drawback as the mattress is more of a yoga mat - thing and with no support.
The common areas make it seem like a co-op house, each person contributes humor, mood and conversation as they use one of the two kitchens or pass in the hallway toward a toilet (two on each floor). A neat detail is the offer of bags to keep food items for the fridge and labels for each bag so everyone respects private property.
The neighborhood is delightful (pub, coffee, groceries, pet supplies, etc) and bus stops are at each corner making cheap transport a snap. My only struggle was on arrival late (front desk closes at 17:00), with jet lag and general inexperience in a new city, the lockbox for room keys was not immediately obvious on the wall. I asked another resident for help though and all was resolved.

The property has two kitchens and an outdoor yard-very convenient. You will have to bring your own towels.
Parking is on the street, but no cost overnight.

I liked the idea of the free stuff in the fridge, board games in the other room, because it’s not in the city centre, peace and quiet, there’s a pub across the road, fish and chip shop and a Scotmid a few mins walk, buses into town, couldn’t really ask for a better place 🙂

Do not come under any circumstances (however cheap)

Can't I put a 0? I have travelled a lot and visited many hotels, this is without a doubt the worst. Dirty, poor customer service, horrible rooms, dirty kitchen... I'm not in favor of hurting lodging, but that's stopping.

Acceptable for a few days.

We came here in May 2026, as a couple, in a private room with a shared bathroom. The room was very pleasant, large, and well-heated. Even though, of course, one should not expect incredible decor, it is a youth hostel. The shower was clean. No unpleasant surprises, the same goes for the kitchen which has everything needed: air fryer, oven, stovetop, microwave, kettle. Soundproofing would be the point to improve. Do not expect to sleep in here! The location is great; you have to cross a park to reach Old Edinburgh. And to get to New Edinburgh, it takes about 20 minutes on foot, which is quite acceptable.
