Glorious mid winter break

We had a fabulous 3 night mid week break, and left feeling refreshed, and well fed. Delicious food, qwaffable wines, and a lovely honesty bar. The room was spacious, warm and a gorgeous bathroom. So nice to relax in when returning after many a walk straight from the hotel. The staff are so friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. My only gripe is that the electric charger is a 3 prong plug. However, Penrith services are close by to charge your car. We will definitely be returning.

Bedrooms need updating.

Stayed at Askham Hall for one night on a dinner bed and breakfast stay. As per other guest reviews we would give a five star rating for the fantastic food and service, likewise the hotels lounges and library. This establishment is let down by the bedrooms. Fully appreciate that Askham Hall is a very old building with the usual uneven floors, however with a little tlc the bedrooms could be brought up to a reasonable standard. i.e. fit some curtains that actually close, fit blinds that close properly, preferably black out blinds that actually reach the window sill. and finally (applies to the room that we were allocated) get rid of the big round table that sits in the middle of the bedroom which serves no purpose whatsoever. The bathroom was large with a substantial shower and free standing bath along with two washbasins, but again needs a little tlc. Apart from that an enjoyable stay!!

Hotel not recommended, restaurant very good.

We stayed there for a night, and ate in the restaurant. I would recommend the restaurant but not the hotel, it is ok only. The whole place is slightly run down, rambling corridors with uneven floors, and needs many millions to get it right. They are trying but it is clear they are constrained. The topiary garden sums it up, contains beatifully manicured yew shapes, but a row of these are on a grass bank which is covered with overgrown grass and weeds! The rooms are all a little bit basic and run down, but clean and the bed very comfortable.

Wonderful restaurant - bedrooms an awful lot less so.

Allium is superb - exquisite presentation of excellent cooking with real flavour. Definitely a 5* place.
Whilst the lounges and dining rooms are lovely environments, the two bedrooms we’ve had at Askham Hall are much less so. The most recent one had a stain on carpet, a broken blind, a broken soap tray in the shower, a broken sink plug chain, a broken toilet roll holder, a shower head with water coming out the side and THE most frustrating, regularly unavailable and dropping ultra-slow WiFi.
That Allium is due to move to Sharrow Bay Hotel and Askham Hall itself is up for sale, may have a lot to do with it.

Expensive for an average hotel

Rooms were cold, large gap under the door.
Not disabled friendly. We were there for a wedding and felt like we were rushed out of the wedding breakfast.
Saw the man (staff) who cooked the evening pizza, vaping and the smoke was going on the food!
